Greeneville Airport: November – 2010

Engineer: Ed McHugh – Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon, Inc.

Geotechnical Engineer: Dennis Huckaba – GEOServices, LLC

The Problem:

The contractor encountered soft, wet soil in between pinnacle rock formations in the subgrade under a taxiway.  This soil was inadequate for the support of the taxiway.

Potential Solutions:

  1. Lime stabilization
  2. Remove problem material
  3. Undercut and replace with a Geotextile fabric, Geogrid, and a structural fill

Final Recommendation:

After the cost and life cycle of each potential solution was analyzed, the choice was clear.  The Geotextile fabric and Geogrid were placed on top of the subgrade along with a structural fill that was determined on site.  The depth of the structural fill was determined by the Geo-technical Engineer and dictated by the residual soil.

As you can see, the stone is being placed and spread directly on top of the Geogrid in 6″-8″ lifts.
